Ms. Celiac at Mr. Mike’s

To finish off the birthday weekend extravaganza my boyfriend took me to Mr. Mike’s in Coquitlam. Mr. Mike’s is a casual restaurant, with a large lounge on one side and the dining room on the other. Their motto is “It’s a West Coast Thing!” which is obvious when you are in the restaurant. They have bicycles hanging from the ceiling, a kayak and various other items posted on walls and the ceiling around the restaurant. Their menu items are named after places on the west coast; Prawn Tofino, Pemberton Skins, Smuggler’s Cove Sirloin (or chicken) and the Skookumchuck Chicken Burger, to name a few.
When I’m here I normally alternate between the Smuggler’s Cove Chicken or the Skookumchuck Chicken Burger (sans bun). The Smuggler’s Cove is a chicken breast with a creole butter, scallops, prawns and fresh tomatoes and green onions, served with a rice pilaf and seasonal vegetables. I love this dish. It is just spicy enough to give some heat, but not so much that your mouth is on fire. The chicken breast is always cooked perfectly, not at all over done, as are the prawns and scallops. Mr. Mike’s also offers a Smuggler’s Cove Sirloin variation, which I have never tried, but I’m assuming it’s probably very good as well.
The Skookumchuck Chicken Burger is a chicken breast topped with asiago cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, sauteed mushrooms and a pesto herb aioli (basically a pesto mayo). The first time I ordered this dish the server let me know that the mushrooms are usually sauteed with flour (for what reason, I have no idea), so they did them a different way for me. So every time since then I’m sure to let them know I’m Celiac so that I don’t get poisoned via mushrooms! When I order this I ask for the pesto aioli on the side (I guess it’s usually slathered on the bun), because it is fabulous for dipping fries into! This is what I ordered the last time I was at Mr. Mike’s.
My boyfriend ordered the Bugaboo Ribs, which are smothered in an Antler Ale infused bbq sauce, and are served with fries and garlic toast. When his meal arrived I saw that the ribs took over the entire plate. It was a massive serving of ribs. He said they were great, there was a ton of sauce on them and he really liked the beer infused flavour.
I really like going to Mr. Mike’s because it is local, they have good food, are not expensive, the restaurant feels very comfortable and they are attentive to allergies. You can dine here for any occasion and they will always make you feel welcome, as well as dine here with any allergy and they will find ways to make sure you have a fabulous meal.

  1. Ooooh be careful of fries! Sometimes places coat the potatoes in seasoned flour (like how Safeway Deli does potato wedges that have a weird crust of stuff on them) or dunk old fries in them (ew!!) to crunch them up when re-frying them. Ugh!!

Maybe the mushrooms are sauteed with flour because they let out a lot of liquid and get squishy and gross, so dredging them in the flour helps absorb that and also soak up whatever butter/oil the sauteeing is done in and make a crispy golden coating?
